The George N. Haithwaite '35 Scholarship at Hartwick College has been established by George's nephew, E. Norman McGrattan, to provide tuition assistance for students from rural New York State with demonstrated financial need. The scholarship supports students studying education, sciences, or the arts and pursuing a career or profession that will serve and enrich the lives of others.

George graduated from Hartwick in 1935 and got his J.D. from Albany Law School. He was drafted into the Army during WWII and worked with the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) serving in Washington, D.C. and London, England. After the war, George and his wife, Anita, moved to Indianapolis, IN, where he worked as legal counsel for the government in the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He was also a member of the Masons, advancing to the Shriners.

George was the youngest of five siblings. At 18, after his mother died, George went to live with his sister, sharing a room with his nephew, Norman McGrattan. George's brothers and sisters made sure that he got a college education so that he "could make something of himself." "George was well-liked," Norman says. "He was always a leader."

Untapped Potential
George enjoyed significant success throughout his life and when he died at the age of 95 his estate was divided up among his nine nieces and nephews, including Norman. As an elementary school teacher for 27 years, Norman has been committed to helping young people achieve their full potential.

"They can never take what you've learned away from you," he says. He believes a strong liberal arts education is essential to achieving that goal. Norman feels that too many people fail to make arrangements in life to ensure that their estate assets, large or small, will be used to carry on the values they held dear in life.

Norman has established a gift annuity at Hartwick College. The gift will fund a scholarship in his uncle's name and help future generations of Hartwick students achieve their full potential. It will also provide Norman with fixed, dependable payments for his lifetime.
