Gifts That Keep on Giving
Daughter Endows Scholarship to Honor her Mother
Longtime Hartwick employee Doris Reeves passed away on February 28, 2019. She was 94 years old.
Doris devoted 40 years to the College, working as the director of social activities, director of parent and community relations, and director of parent/grandparent activities. In honor of this commitment, her daughter, Barbara Howell, created a scholarship in Doris' name. It is a fitting tribute as Barbara wants her mom to continue to have an impact at Hartwick.
In addition to creating a scholarship in her mother's name, Barbara also plans to honor Doris' birthday each year with another gift. Every August Barbara intends to make an additional contribution to the scholarship fund, allowing it to help even more students.
Doris not only worked closely with students, she was also a generous donor to dozens of objectives at the College.
The Doris H. Reeves Endowed Scholarship will be awarded to students in good academic standing and with demonstrated financial need. Her daughter posed few restrictions on awarding the scholarship, instead honoring her mother's interest in so many initiatives at Hartwick. As Barbara says, "Hartwick was Mom's passion."
A Note From a Past Advisee….
I just read through The Wick and noticed the announcement about Doris Reeves.
Mrs. Reeves is the reason I attended Hartwick. I had applied to a number of colleges back in the day when one had to hand write all the applications with various essays which could not be “cut and pasted” like today. It was grueling work.
I sent in my application and soon after she called and said that I was certainly the type of student Hartwick wanted. I think I was a bit sassy since I was tired of filling in the forms. She appreciated my straight talk and confidence, I guess.
The day after I graduated from high school, I went to Chile as an exchange student for the summer. Before I went off, she advised me to visit Hartwick, which I had not done at all, to decide on my fall classes and to pay my deposit/tuition. I drove to Oneonta with a friend, met with her and did all she requested.
Mrs. Reeves remained my adviser until I decided on a major during spring of my sophomore year when I crafted an ISP (Independent Study Program) with Art Education and Museum Studies. We visited often in her office up in Breese while I found my voice and path.
